Tallahassee, FL (June 20, 2024) – C. Camden Whitlock, AIA, LEED AP, founding principal of Architects Lewis + Whitlock, has announced his retirement effective at the end of the year. Cam co-founded Architects Lewis + Whitlock (ALW) in 2000, with Florida A&M University classmate Rodney Lewis, and together they led the firm’s growth from a small, two-person firm focused solely on architecture into an integrated design studio setting new standards for performance and design excellence. Cam and Rodney have steadily grown and developed ALW into one of the largest and most successful firms in the North Florida region. The firm’s portfolio contains some of the most distinguished structures in Tallahassee, including Waller Park at The State Capitol, 201 Park Avenue, Smokey Hollow, and the North Florida Innovation Labs. Some might argue that their most significant projects can be found on the campuses of Florida State University, including the FSU Student Union, the Dunlap Success Center, The Globe, the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship, and Kotler-Coville Glass Pavilion at the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, just to name a few. Larry Rubin, R.A., the former Director of Design and Construction at FSU, summed up their contributions this way: “Cam Whitlock and ALW have left a remarkable imprint on the physical appearance of Florida State. Their work is notable for blending contemporary design with elements that reflect FSU’s most historic architecture. They should be immensely proud of their achievements.” Even with his impressive portfolio of institutional, civic, and commercial projects, Cam Whitlock’s true passion lies in residential architecture. He explains, “These projects often provide a greater sense of personal satisfaction, providing an opportunity to take a more hands-on role in design and revisit aspects of architecture that first sparked my interest in design.” Whitlock’s design philosophy emphasizes the creation of spaces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing, blending modern innovation with timeless elements. Whitlock’s residential projects, primarily located in Tallahassee’s mid-town area, showcase a contemporary take on Mid-Century Modern design. Fellow architect Mark Bertolami describes it as a renaissance; “Cam reintroduced a style of residential architecture that was prominent throughout much of Tallahassee in the 1950’s, 60’, and 70’s. His commitment to design excellence has earned ALW numerous awards and accolades, solidifying his reputation as a leading figure in residential design.” Similar acclaim can be said for their commercial, civic, and recreational work, as evidenced by the numerous state, regional, and local architectural awards that ALW has earned. “We don’t begin projects with the goal of capturing a design award, says Rodney Lewis, “but it is gratifying to have a good number of our projects recognized by our peers.” Cam’s departure comes at a time when new staff arrivals and internal promotions will fortify and empower the talents of the firm’s leadership team. The company has elevated Emily Ely, Matt Persinger, and Ryan Sheplak to the position of Vice President. Emily Ely is a licensed interior designer with 17 years of dedicated expertise in commercial architecture and design. Her portfolio highlights high-profile interiors with extensive regional experience in institutional, workplace and educational design. She’s executed many notable projects such as the TCC Center for Innovation Renovation, North Florida Innovation Labs, and the new City of Tallahassee Senior Center. As Vice President of Interior Architecture, Emily will lead the interior team in developing research-based solutions that demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the client’s vision and programmatic needs. Emily’s human-centered and empathetic design approach fosters long-term relationships and a collective appreciation of the project’s value by all stakeholders. She consistently delivers beautifully crafted spaces founded on creative expression, function, and innovation. Emily is actively involved in the community through her service on the TEMPO Foundation Board and the Tallahassee Senior Center Foundation Board, through various Leadership Tallahassee committees (Can’t Outshine 39!), and formerly the Wish Upon a Star committee for Children’s Home Society. She is a former Knight Creative Communities Institute (KCCI) Catalyst, having served as chair for the Red Hills Rhythm project in 2019. Matt Persinger is a licensed architect and LEED-accredited professional with 14 years of architectural experience in Chicago, IL and Jackson, MS where he led a variety of successful projects in the institutional, community focused, private sector and historic preservation markets. As Vice President of Operations, Matt will leverage his project management experience and honed communication skills to ensure each project reaches its greatest potential. His management style skillfully provides detail-oriented guidance to the design team while responding to the unique needs of our clients. Matt sees each project as a search for the next iteration of a better place, town, or community. Still new to Tallahassee, he has become the driving force and project architect behind a number of projects under construction that will impact the area, such as the Tallahassee Police Department Safety Campus, the new Capital City Bank office on Apalachee Parkway, and the new Dawn of Hope Family Center at the Refuge House. Matt is also working with the 2024 KCCI Catalyst team, developing the Tallahassee Bicentennial Park in honor of the city’s 200 years of history. "It's a privilege to join the leadership team of ALW. He has a proven track record of creating award-winning projects like the Kotler-Coville Glass Pavilion in Sarasota, FL, the Florida State University (FSU) Student Union, Envision Credit Union, and Tallahassee National Bank. Recently, Ryan led the design team for the new Rosewood Memorial Pavilion, receiving the Honor Award in the Unbuilt category from the AIA Florida 2024 Design Awards. As Vice President of Architecture + Design, Ryan will continue to set the stage for the creative direction for the firm, mentor design team members, and maintain brand consistency. Ryan engages in the architecture community as a member of AIA Tallahassee and a past graduate of the Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU) School of Architecture and Engineering Technology (SAET). He serves as the Vice President/President-Elect for AIA Tallahassee and annually participates as a jury member for end of semester student project reviews at the FAMU SAET. "I am deeply honored to step into the VP role at ALW, working alongside our remarkable leadership team. For more than 20 years, Florida State University officials, students and planners dreamed of creating a new student union facility. Master plans were developed around a new union. Studies were conducted and sketches were drawn. Even when the actual design of the new union began, few people could fully understand or appreciate the magnitude of a new facility. On August 22, those dreams became a reality as FSU officially opened its brand-new masterpiece. Frequently described now as the University’s “living room on campus,” the new Student Union recreates many of the student spaces that the former union provided, including food service, meeting rooms, ballroom space, entertainment spaces, a new bookstore, and even a new bowling alley to name a few. But what the old union specifically lacked, the new facility provides and that is space; much more of it and much better quality and functional space. “This new facility solves many of the problems that the former union exhibited. This complex is much better suited for a university the size of Florida State and is commensurate to the quality of the students, the programs offered, and the institution as a whole. We believe it is a game-changer and we are very gratified to have been involved,” ALW Principal, Cam Whitlock shared.

A licensed architect and LEED accredited professional, Matt joins our team as a Project Manager with a Master’s degree from Yale University and over 12 years of high-quality architectural experience in several U.S. regions. After stints in the IL, OR, and MS, Matt, his wife Gini, and their two kids have moved to Tallahassee to be closer to family. As an architect, his resolve that each project should elevate the experience of all who encounter the project and be executed with excellence in design and craft adds another voice to the established values of our firm!
